Due to a major winter storm forecast for northern Illinois this weekend, officials at Southern Illinois University Carbondale say residence halls will open a day early on Friday at 2 p.m. to allow students to travel safely.

Weather conditions are aligning for a potential winter storm throughout the region Wednesday night into Thursday. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued.

Kelly Hooper with the National Weather Service in Paducah says three to four inches of snow are possible with it starting around the evening commute.

Winter Storm Watch Cancelled - Less Than An Inch of Snow Expected

The Winter Storm Watch was cancelled early Friday morning. The forecast data has had tremendous difficulty handling snowfall amounts with this system. All of the latest data points to lower accumulations.

CLOSINGS AND DELAYS FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2018:

The region is recovering from its first winter storm of the season.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest accumulation of snow and sleet - around four inches - occurred in eastern Pope and western Hardin counties of southern Illinois and just east of Paducah in western Kentucky.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Thursday evening for the region along and north of Route 13.

The National Weather Service says snow accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected, with the heaviest amounts expected generally north of Interstate 64.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 am to 6 pm Wednesday.

Rain will transition over to wet snow late Tuesday night over portions of southeast Missouri...then along the Mississippi River and over southern Illinois Wednesday morning. The snow will continue during the day...before tapering off from west to east Wednesday afternoon.
