A popular visitor area in southern Illinois is getting a new attraction.

Local officials broke ground this week on an amphitheater project in the Vienna Community Park. It will be named after Vienna's Director of Tourism Phil Morris.

The Class of 2020 won't have a traditional graduation, since COVID-19 is preventing in-person ceremonies from taking place.

Under guidelines set by the State Board of Education, schools can have a drive through or drive in ceremonies.

Vienna Superintendent Josh Stafford says they felt is was best to stick to their original graduation date.

“We have student that will be leaving for college, that will be leaving for military service, or career, things that may have already been setup and been predetermined in, traveling around the country to do those things.”

Vienna IGA to Reopen

Two Vienna natives are planning to re-open the IGA store in the Johnson County town.

Chad and Chance Miles, who currently own Miles Brothers Meats in West Frankfort, will call the store Miles Brothers Foods. It will retain the familiar IGA sign.


The City of Vienna suddenly finds itself without a grocery store.

Mayor Jon Simmons says Sam's IGA closed a few days ago without notice.
