The spring enrollment at SIU-Carbondale aligns with fall semester numbers.

Spokesperson Rae Goldsmith says official spring enrollment is down 11.63 percent from spring of 2018. The percentage is slightly better than the fall semester's decline of 11.96 percent from fall of 2017.

A state lawmaker has proposed a plan to use state funds to build a new higher education center in downtown Springfield.

State Senator Andy Manar (D, Bunker Hill) introduced legislation on Wednesday that calls for $50 million to build a campus and public affairs center. The proposed building would sit within a mile of Southern Illinois University's existing medical school.

To date, 13 of the 20 proposed schools have been through the campus modification process. Eight of the 13 have been recommended for approval by both the Faculty Senate and Graduate Council. Conversations are continuing regarding the remaining five.

Documents show the former SIU system president might have hindered student recruitment efforts for the Carbondale campus by not approving a mailing list purchase.

The Southern Illinoisan reports emails show then-President Randy Dunn didn't take action during his final two months in office on spending $499,000 to buy contact information for students who've taken the SAT, ACT and other standardized tests.

Dunn resigned in July after criticism over his proposal to shift $5 million in state funding from the Carbondale campus to Edwardsville.
