SIU’s Center for Sustainable Farming opened their weekly market on Wednesday.
Students, staff and the public can find fresh produce grown by the sustainable farm at the student center on the SIU campus.
The Exchange is open on Wednesday’s selling flowers, herbs and produce that was picked that morning.
Sustainable Farm Manager Lindsey Cartwright says this gives students the opportunity to learn the growing and retail component of the agriculture industry.
“We kind of started this last summer on the farm, and we decided that our passion was to provide students and staff on campus with produce and so last fall, we, the student center, was kind enough to give us a spot here. And we come once a week on Wednesdays from 11 to two. And we just bring whatever's fresh in season, so right now, we really just have a lot of greens and onions and cucumbers.”
The sustainable farm also provides produce to the dining halls and student food pantry.
