Southern Illinois University Carbondale is marking the death of another student.

In a message on the university's Facebook page, Chancellor Austin Lane expressed his condolences to family and friends in the death of Daniel Fernando Lobo.

Lobo was shot and died of his injuries on Saturday. His memorial services are set for later this week in Waukegan.

Lobo was studying Biological Science at SIUC. His obituary says he was preparing to graduate in May.

Lobo's death marks the fourth student to die this semester. Keeshanna Jackson was killed in a shooting at an off-campus party shortly after the start of the semester; Joe Ermel died in a motorcycle accident in October; Jacob Jurinek was among those killed at the Astroworld Festival earlier this month when the crowd rushed the stage.

SIU students are off this week for the Thanksgiving holiday. Chancellor Lane and other university leaders say counseling services are available for those who need them.

Jennifer Fuller joined Capitol News Illinois in July 2023 as the organization’s broadcast director. She will oversee the launch and operations of CNI’s new broadcast division.
