Carterville Celebrates National Night Out

Millions of people across the country will come together tonight to celebrate National Night Out.

Locally, Carterville will hold their celebration at the James Street Park this evening.

National Night Out brings awareness to crime and drug prevention by promoting police and community partnerships.

The event started 38 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has spread to thousands of communities.

Officer Brad Dillard with the Carterville Police Department says the department was wanting to connect with residence and started holding the event four years ago.

“This is truly a community teamwork in providing safer drug free communities, it’s not just about law enforcement, it’s not just about the neighbors, we all have to work together and work as a team to be able to have safe drug free neighborhoods which I think we all would like to see happen.”

The event is from 6 to 8 pm at the James Street Park and face masks are not required because its an outdoor event.
