Governor J-B Pritzker is announcing more than $5 million in grants to help kids get to school a little easier.
He says the Safe Routes to School grants will fund 39 projects around the state, improving safety and reducing traffic around elementary and middle schools.
"Using federal funds, we'll be able to make these sidewalk improvements and increasing signage, making crosswalks safer and providing equipment to crossing guards and parent patrol programs. These projects will allow more of our students to safely walk or bike to school and will make our communities safer and healthier places to live."
Projects receiving funding in southern Illinois include 89-thousand in Herrin and 76-thousand in Murphysboro for sidewalk improvements, crossing improvements and signage.
