Three people are dead, and another is in critical condition, after a fiery crash along Route 13 in Williamson County Monday night. Two Carbondale residents and a Marion woman were killed in a three-vehicle crash overnight on Route 13 in Williamson County.
Illinois State Police say 47-year-old Dr. Frank Walker, 18-year-old Abdullah Alfadhli, both of Carbondale and 29-year-old Stephanie Stowers of Marion, were killed in the accident that closed parts of Route 13 in Williamson County for several hours.
Troopers say the crash occurred around 9:30 Monday night at Cambria Road and Route 13.
Investigators say a 1999 Pontiac Firebird, driven by Alfadhli and the 2006 Porsche nine-eleven, driven by Walker, were headed west on Route 13, when a 2007 Toyota Scion SXC, driven by Stowers, tried to turn north onto Cambria Road from the east-bound lanes.
The Firebird collided with the SXC, and then caught fire. Police say the Porsche's driver tried to swerve to avoid the other two vehicles, but lost control and slid into Crab Orchard Lake.
A preliminary investigation shows excessive speed may have played a role in the crash. In addition to the three fatalities, another person is in critical condition.
