Suspect in Shawnee Forest Manhunt Found Dead

Mug Shot
Illinois State Police

A man accused of shooting a central Illinois police officer a week ago has been found dead in the Shawnee National Forest.Illinois State Police say after a week-long manhunt, Dracy "Clint" Pendleton was spotted just after midnight Sunday morning running from the Sulphur Springs Church cemetery.

State and local police, along with the FBI, set up a perimeter to catch Pendleton, and he was found later at an abandoned house. The area was cleared, and a police spokesman says when teams got near the house, Pendleton began shooting.

Investigators say police shot back. Just after 5:00 Sunday morning, a SWAT Team robot was sent into the house, where it found Pendleton's body on the second floor, along with the assault rifle he was suspected of having.

Police say they're processing several crime scenes in the area, which may remain closed through Monday. Parts of the Shawnee National Forest had been closed as the manhunt went on through the week, including the Lusk Creek Wilderness Area - where Pendleton was suspected of hiding out.

An FBI Swat Team member was shot during the overnight operation. Police say he was injured, and taken to a hospital for treatment.
