Splash Park Remains on Hold, State Funding Frozen

WSIU

Carbondale leaders remain hopeful a hold on state funds for their Super Splash Park will be lifted soon.

Work to finish the Super Splash Park Outdoor Aquatics Center in Carbondale has been on hold since last month when the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, at Governor Bruce Rauner's direction, froze the project's $2.5 million grant.

The Carbondale Park District has been hopeful it would still receive the money in short order since the project is about 75% complete.

City Councilman Lee Fronabarger has been involved with the aquatic center working group for several years. He says part of the money to finish the project has been released, but it's not enough yet to get the job done.

"The different committees and the Park Board are going to meet, to see if there are other options to go forward - so we can open as close as possible to Memorial Day weekend, which is traditionally the weekend that most public pools and aquatic centers open across the United States."

The Carbondale Park District broke ground on the project in September 2013.
