Special Election set for Emerson's 8th District Seat

Southeast Missouri Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson submitted her letter of resignation Tuesday to Governor Jay Nixon and US House speaker John Boehner.

The Cape Girardeau Republican announced last month that she would be leaving congress to become president of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Governor Nixon has set a special election for June 4th to fill out the remainder of Emerson's term.  So far 12 Republicans have expressed interest in the open 8th District seat.  Missouri Democrats are also going through the caucus process.

Missouri Secretary of State spokesperson Liz Abram-Oldham says they want to have time for military personnel overseas, and any other Missouri citizens who would be affected by this vote that are overseas, to have the opportunity to vote.
