SIU leaders say they're working with others in higher education to get a new rule from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement changed before the fall semester starts next month.
The rule requires international students to be taking classes in-person, not fully online. If their school has moved to a virtual classroom, they have to transfer - or leave the country.
SIUC Chancellor Austin Lane says it's giving a lot of students anxiety.
"Our international students are concerned. We are reaching out to those students, as much as we get information - detailed information - we're relaying that. But it is someting we're closely monitoring."
There is some question about what happens if a school is forced to move all online mid-semester, and whether that means students would abruptly be sent home.
Chancellor Lane says they're working to answer those questions, and hopefully change the rule.
