The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois and the Women United Network are holding a vigil on Saturday.
It'll be a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The NPT was signed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and to work towards nuclear disarmament.
The peace coalition's Georgeann Hartzog says the vigil will call attention to the fact that the nuclear disarmament goal has not been met.
She says the vigil also calls for the U.S. to support the United Nation's new Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to prevent future nuclear disasters.
The vigil is from noon to 1 on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the corner of Main and Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.
The remembrance ceremony and potluck will be on Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Church of the Good Shepard beginning in Carbondale at 5:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
