Metro East Man Dies in I-57 Crash

Badge

A Metro East man died in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 57 in southern Illinois.

Illinois State Police say 57-year-old Wayne Maxwell of O'Fallon was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash in the northbound lanes of I-57 at milepost 47.
Troopers say a semi, driven, by 27-year-old Jagpreet Singh of Lenexa, Kansas, and a van driven by Maxwell, were slowed to stop for the backed up traffic due to road construction. Another semi, driven by 62-year-old Willie Lee Shelby of Madison, Mississippi, rear-ended Maxwell's van, shoving it into the rear of Singh's semi.

Shelby received minor injuries. Singh and his passenger were not hurt.

Shelby was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash. Additional charges are possible.
