Students at Jefferson Elementary School along with schools across the Midwest today participated in the Great ShakeOut Drill.

In Courtney Griffith's second grade class students were visited by Illinois Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director Jennifer Ricker and St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird to help prepare for potential earthquakes.

Ricker told students major earthquakes are not usual in the area but are possible due to the New Madrid Fault line running below the state.

IEMA Deputy Director Jennifer Ricker addresses the class.

Ricker says when an earthquake does erupt people should drop, find cover, and hold on.

While speaking with Griffith’s class, Ricker showed an example natural disaster preparedness kit of what people should pack and keep safe if an earthquake occurs. It included one gallon for each person for each day recommended for a minimum of three days, blankets, flashlights, batteries, weather radio, canned goods and a can opener.
