Representatives raised concerns about the coronavirus pandemic and changes to their operations.

Representatives from Southern Illinois human service agencies held a meeting with local legislators to discuss issues and concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Leaders from agencies raised topics including issues with reimbursement for remote services, confusion over small-business loans through the Paycheck Protection Program, and ways remote services could continue to benefit Illinoisans in the future.

Another issue of concern was delays caused by court closures, particularly regarding adoptions and children continuing to be stuck in the foster care system because an adoption can’t be finalized.

Agency representatives also asked legislators to support extending remote resources even after the governor’s stay-at-home order is lifted, noting that many of their clients are high risk and may not feel comfortable returning to in-person visits even when it is allowed.

Legislators on the call expressed support for the programs, but noted that budget shortfalls could be an issue in the upcoming fiscal year. They also expressed strong support for expanding broadband access across the state.
