Illinois Primary 2014: Statewide Races Decided

Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner won Republican primary for governor, and will face incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn this November.

The Associated Press declared Rauner the winner over State Senator Kirk Dillard. The winner of the GOP primary will advance to a November matchup with Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who easily won his nomination for a second full term.

State Sen. Bill Brady conceded the four-way Republican primary for governor, telling supporters in Bloomington that the race didn't end up as he'd hoped.    Early returns showed Brady far behind Rauner and Dillard. The fourth candidate, Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford delivered a statement shortly after polls closed saying he'd be back with a different role in Illinois politics.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has won the Democratic nomination in his bid for a second full term in office. The Chicago Democrat topped a lesser-known challenger, activist Tio Hardiman, in Tuesday's primary. With no serious opponent, Quinn didn't have to dig into his campaign funds. He finished 2013 with about $4.5 million in his campaign fund.  Quinn has ramped up his campaign in recent weeks, hiring a strategist who managed New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's campaign.

U.S. Senate:

Republican US Senate candidate Jim Oberweis has been declared the winner in the GOP primary. The dairy magnate has defeated a suburban Chicago businessman in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Illinois.    State Sen. Jim Oberweis' victory over Doug Truax sends him on to a November matchup with Democrat Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate.    Oberweis is from the western Chicago suburb of Sugar Grove. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 2012 and had made previous unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate and governor.     He has been criticized for some political ads, including one before a previous election in which he said the number of immigrants entering the U.S. illegally each week could fill Soldier Field.     Truax has never held political office but had support from former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Illinois Treasurer:

Former House Republican Leader Tom Cross has defeated DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan to win the Republican nomination for state treasurer.    Cross is from Oswego. He has been a member of the General Assembly since 1993, and spent a decade in the House leadership post. He highlighted his legislative experience on the campaign trail. The seat is being vacated by current treasurer Dan Rutherford, who made a GOP primary bid for governor. Cross will take on Democratic state Sen. Michael Frerichs of Champaign in the November general election.
