Illinois Governor J.B Pritzker took what he is calling a proactive approach to welcome immigrants and their families to Illinois, ensuring that they're supported and know their rights.
Under the order, the Illinois Department of Human Services would expand access to welcoming centers in the state for immigrants, refugees and those seeking asylum. State agencies also would inform immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers about helpful programs and social and economic opportunities.
Pritzker says his administration will stand up for all children and families. Pritzker's remarks come as President Trump seeks $5.7 billion for a U.S.-Mexico border wall as part of a plan to control illegal immigration.
One-point-8 million Immigrants call Illinois their home, and nearly one out of six Illinois workers are immigrants. Pritzker says he is from a family of immigrants.
He says it makes economic sense as well since nearly 120,000 business owners in Illinois are immigrants, and immigrant employers will generate at least $2.5 billion in business income.
