Illinois  state comptroller Susana Mendoza visited the SIU campus to talk with employees about problems with health insurance.

After an employee was turned away from her healthcare provider she contacted many state office holders to find answers.

IL comptroller Susana Mendoza responded and offered to come to campus to talk with other employees about similar experiences.

Some said their health providers are turning them away because their insurance is through the state of Illinois, others said they have to pay for the entire cost of services upfront due to the state not paying bills in a timely manner or they are still waiting to be reimbursed for procedures over a year ago.

Mendoza says that the state is 11 billion dollars behind in bills and that increases daily.

“So everyday that we go without a balanced budget or appropriation authority we continue to add 2 million dollars a day in late payment interest penalties that we will never ever get back.”

She says according the state constitution it’s the governor’s responsibility to provide the legislature a balanced budget for them to approve, which Governor Rauner has yet to do.

She plans on traveling the state to find out how this stalemate is affecting the people of the state and use those stories to put pressure on elected officials to get to work.
