Hazardous Material Spill Shuts Down I-57

police

Traffic is getting back to normal after a portion of Interstate 57 in Williamson County was shut down last night.

Emergency crews were called out to an accident involving a semi-truck that wrecked just north of the Johnston City exit, spilling what responders classified as a "corrosive disinfectant" on the road.

The highway was closed from Johnston City to West Frankfort in both directions while crews cleaned up the mess. No evacuations were ordered, and investigators are still looking into what caused the crash.

PREVIOUS STORY:

A hazardous chemical spill shut down Interstate-57 in northern Williamson County Tuesday night.

Williamson County authorities say the accident occurred at mile post 61 just north of the Johnston City exit on I-57 when a southbound semi truck carrying a hazardous material rolled over.  Both the north and south bound lanes were closed.  Police say the chemical is identified as a corrosive liquid disinfectant.

Franklin County Emergency Management officials say heavy traffic is expected on highways 148 and 37 while traffic was being re-routed off of I-57.  Authorities say there is no cause for immediate concern in Franklin County other than the increased traffic during the interstate closure.   Williamson County authorities say it may take several hour to clean up the accident scene.
