Exploring An Ancient Era In Collinsville Illinois

As Illinois Celebrates its Bicentennial, WSIU travels to one of the most significant archaeological sites in North America.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, near Collinsville Illinois.

The Assistant Site Manager is Bill Iseminger and he says there are many mounds scattered around not only in Collinsville, but in nearby St. Louis and East St. Louis.  Iseminger says these dirt mounds were built by hand, roughly one thousand years ago.

Additionally, Iseminger points out that  "We have evidence of people having been here since the end of the ice age in this area.  So that's about nine to 10 thousand B.C."
