Several dozen demonstrators in Carbondale rallied Thursday in the parking lot of the Carbondale Community High School. They were calling for the removal of the school's Resource Officer.
One of those at the rally, Patricia Powel-Preston from Carbondale said:
"It's not just about a resource officer. It's about really understanding what these young people need when they do cross a line, what are the interventions that are gonna work, and they do not have to be police interventions."
Carbondale School District 165 Superintendent Steve Murphy said: "The Resource Officer is there to keep the campus safe. They don't write lunch detentions for kids that smart off to the teacher."
