Statewide coronavirus numbers topped a grim new milestone on Monday, with the death toll surpassing 16-thousand.

With more than 4,400 new cases reported, Illinois' COVID-19 total now stands at more than 942,000. The positivity rate is 7.2%, and hospitalizations jumped by 150 patients to roughly 4,200 statewide.

Locally, some health departments are catching up over a long weekend. More than 700 new cases were reported on Monday across southern Illinois, along with 16 more deaths. In the region, there have been more than 47,000 cases, with about a quarter of those still active, and more than 850 deaths.

In neighboring states, a similar picture as numbers reflect a holiday weekend. Missouri reported roughly 1,500 new cases, Kentucky 1,455, and Indiana nearly 2,500. Each state's positivity rate held mostly steady, as well - Missouri at 16.8%, Kentucky at 7.97%, and Indiana at 23.5%.

Regional correctional centers are still dealing with a large number of active cases - nearly 800 inmates are listed as active COVID-19 cases.
