Carbondale Welcomes Taiwan Sister City Officials

By Brad Palmer

Carbondale, IL – A special delegation is visiting the city of Carbondale.

Governmental officials from Carbondale's sister city in Taina City Taiwan are spending two days in southern Illinois. Carbondale Mayor Brad Cole says the two decade long relationship is proving to be beneficial for both communities.

During a welcoming ceremony at City Hall Tuesday, Mayor Cole presented the Tainan City delegation with gifts and the visitors from Taiwan presented Cole with a picture from his visit to their community this past summer.

Tainan City Mayor Tain-Tsair Hsu says higher education is a major focus of the sister city relationship. Students from SIUC and National Cheng Kung University are involved in joint research activities and degree-granting programs related to engineering and other technical fields.

Carbondale also has sister city agreements with Shimla, India and Tainai (TIE-n-eye) City, Japan.
