Carbondale is receiving one of 16 grants for local projects to improve bike paths across Illinois.
Carbondale will receive 75-thousand dollars for Phase Two of the Northwest Trail project, which will involve the acquisition of a 1.24 mile corridor along an old railroad bed from New Era Road to Route 13. The trail will connect with the adjacent Northwest Trail.
The Illinois General Assembly approved the Bicycle Path Grant Program in 1989 and funding comes from a percentage of motor vehicle title fees.
