Thursday night Carbondale leaders, social activist and members of the NAACP held a town hall on policing and other concerns.
With cases of racial injustice being highlighted across the country, city and community leaders came together to discuss solutions on a local level.
Through multiple platforms the panelist answered questions on many topics including residency requirements, body cameras, school programs, de-escalation training, and defunding the city's police department.
When asked about the use of force, chief of police Jeff Grubbs says the majority of his officers are trained in de-escalation and crisis intervention.
“We use a continuum of force model that the officers are required to only use that level of force based upon the resistance or aggression of those individuals that they’re facing.”
During the town hall the Carbondale NAACP and the Carbondale Police Department signed a list of shared principles as an agreement to openly work together. A second town hall meeting is already being planned.
