Affected Consumers Can Now File Claims in Equifax Settlement

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says affected consumers can now file claims to qualify for payments from the Consumer Restitution Fund established under the historic $600 million settlement with Equifax.

The settlement is the largest data breach settlement in U.S. history, and it resolves a nationwide investigation Raoul's office led into Equifax's massive 2017 data breach.
Attorney General spokesperson Annie Thompson says a new website lets the public check to see if they are eligible and guides people through the claims process.

"We would certainly advise people to go ahead and visit the website to see whether they qualify to receive restitution. The Equifax data breach was one of the largest data breaches. In Illinois alone, approximately 5.4 million residents were impacted."

Restitution includes free credit monitoring or cash settlements. Under the terms of the settlement, Equifax agreed to provide a single Consumer Restitution Fund of up to 425-million dollars dedicated to consumer restitution. The settlement also requires Equifax to offer affected consumers extended credit monitoring services for 10 years.
