The speed limit on most Illinois interstates would go up to 70, under a bill that's en route to the Governor.
Illinois could soon join the majority of states by raising the speed limit on highways to 70 mph. A bill to do that awaits the governor's action and has passed with enough votes in the House and Senate to suggest it would survive a veto, if there is one. Southern Illinois State Representative Jerry Costello is sponsor of the bill. He says almost every other state has adopted a 70-mile per hour limit.
Costello says the disparity in speeds between states is what, many times, causes accidents. State Representative Jim Sacia disagrees. He says it's not safe to go that fast. The Illinois Department of Transportation also opposes the increase. But spokeswoman for Governor Pat Quinn says he will review the bill.
