October is cybersecurity awareness month and the FBI wants to remind everyone to take extra precaution to protect themselves.

Illinois is ranked 5th in the nation for having the most internet crimes with identity theft being the most common.

Victims lost more than one hundred and fifty million dollars.

Special Agent in charge of Springfield field office David Nanz says always err on the side of caution.

“If you have any doubt at all, call get the number of the legitimate, whether it be a financial institution or legitimate business, get their number and call them directly and ask hey I got this email is this legitimate.”

Nanz says if you are a victim of cyber fraud you can report it to the FBI using the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3 dot gov.
