American Red Cross faces a shortage of medical screeners

American Red Cross Logo

The American Red Cross is not only dealing with a blood shortage, they’re also facing a shortage of medical screeners.

Just before the holiday’s the American Red Cross was at a critically low supply of blood products.

They’re also struggling to find medical screeners as well.

The medical screeners check your temperature, test your blood for iron and other vitals prior to a donation.

Regional Communications Director Sherri McKinney says they’re facing employee shortages just like a lot of businesses are.

“We have had a need for a full botanist for quite a while, but now it's also bleeding over no pun intended into the medical screeners where, you know, in all, these folks are trained because they are providing health services, so we provide the training free of charge.”

These employees go through three weeks of training before working at a blood drive.
