SIU is celebrating National TRiO week with a variety of activities on campus this week.

The SIU TRiO program encourages access to higher education for traditionally disadvantaged students through three programs on the Carbondale campus.

Those programs are Project Upward Bound, Student Support Services and the McNair Scholars Program.

TRiO director Dr. Renada Greer says SIU Alumni and former Trio graduate assistant Charles Alexander co-founded the Black Bread Company with two of his friends and all three will share their story of success.

"They'll be kind of telling their story and encouraging students. We are encouraging students to, you know, focus on their dreams. Focus on the things that they want to achieve after college and never give up on their dreams.”

Trio will collect winter accessories all week to donate to the Carbondale warming center as well as a Life Beyond College panel discussion and a virtual student conference.

There are three ways for students to qualify, the student has a disability or be a first generation college student or come from a low to moderate income family background.
