CARBONDALE, Ill. — Bryan K. Hotchkins, the author of “My Black is Exhausted: Forever in Pursuit of a Racist-free World Where Hashtags Don’t Exist” will be speaking at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Oct. 10.
Hotchkins will discuss “The Complicated Topic of Race” from 1 to 3 p.m. at the John C. Guyon Auditorium at Morris Library. A book signing will follow. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Hotchkins, a tenured professor of higher education in the department of educational psychology, leadership and counseling at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, extensively studies how racist educational environments may affect student, faculty and administrator involvement on campuses and how people of African descent encounter racism in educational environments.
With a doctorate in educational leadership and policy from the University of Utah, Hotchkins has about 25 publications to his name, including “Becoming (Un)exhausted: An Interactive Journal for Moving Beyond Racism,” as well as his newest book. He uses his research and presentations to help marginalized people learn to amplify their voices to validate their experiential knowledge and be heard as he seeks to help everyone better understand the complicated topic of race.
