March is National Social Work Month

This is National Social Work Month and Gary Hillsman, the CEO of Caritas Family Solutions, says the work social workers do is vital for society, because they often work with children, who are in tough situations.

"This is all very tremendous work, that changes the course of children and families' well-being. You know it keeps tragic things from happening, and supports families in their efforts to do better, whether that's because of mental illness, or substance abuse, or domestic violence or extreme poverty, or other things that come into play."

Hillsman says nationwide, as well as in southern Illinois, there is a shortage of social workers. He adds Caritas is currently hiring social workers, and you can learn more by browsing to:

Kevin Boucher is a retired broadcaster. Most recently he was a news reporter for WSIU radio. He grew up watching nature programs including Mutual of Omaha’s wild kingdom and the many Jacques Cousteau specials which sparked his passion with nature.
