Ukraine native and SIU Student Diana Butsko speaks at a rally of support on the SIU Campus on Thursday March 3 2022

Dozens of people gathered on the SIU Campus this Thursday afternoon to show support for the people of the Ukraine. Diana Butsko is a graduate student at SIU and a native of Ukraine. She says right now, she is able to talk to her family every night, but she is constantly worried.

"You go to bed hoping they won't die, hoping they will survive this night, then you say them goodbye and then the first thing you do in the morning is you check whether those cities were bombed."

Another SIU Political science student, Dachi Mazanashvili, is from the former Soviet Union country of Georgia, a country that was also attacked by Russia, in 2008. And he says it's been tough watching the news.

"You go to bed hoping they won't die, hoping they will survive this night, then you say them goodbye and then the first thing you do in the morning is you check whether those cities were bombed."

This Saturday the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois is holding a rally to call for more diplomacy to end the Russian invasion. The rally will start at 12:00 noon at the corner of Main street and Illinois Avenue.
