Memorial Service for SIU-C Student Set for Aug. 25

Brad Palmer

SIU-Carbondale will host a memorial service for the student killed this past weekend.

18-year-old Keshanna Jackson died after being shot early Sunday morning outside a party on West Cherry Street.

Remarks at the memorial service will come from a group of local pastors, including Father Joseph Brown, professor in the SIU-C Africana Studies program.

At Sunday night's candlelight vigil, Father Brown said this doesn't signal the end for Keshanna.

"Don't ever tell me that she's gone. She's the reason we're here and she's going to be the reason we walk away. But, if we believe anything about who she is, she will always be here. She's the youngest of our ancestors."

SIU-C Chancellor Austin Lane and Associate Chancellor of Enrollment Management Wendell Williams will provide opening remarks after an introduction by Isaiah Overton, president of SIU Carbondale Undergraduate Student Government.

The memorial service will be Wednesday evening at 6:30 in the Student Center ballrooms.

Officers with the Carbondale and SIU Police Departments are investigating Jackson's death.

Carbondale Chief of Police Stan Reno Tuesday pleaded for anyone with information about the incident that took the life of freshman Keshanna Jackson to come forward.

That sentiment was echoed during a candlelight vigil Sunday night for the 18-year-old from Chicago.

Nancy Maxwell with the Southern Illinois Unity Coalition urged people with information to reach out to police -- or even her organization.

"We need to catch the person who did this. We need to stop this. This isn't going to be a free-for-all where you can just shoot somebody and we are all going to be quiet and let them go on about their life and shoot somebody else and just keep going. I got questions! I need some answers!"

Police indicated Monday there were multiple active shooters.

In addition to Keshanna's death, three others received non-life threatening injuries.
