Officials at SIU-Carbondale say they are aware of a controversial social media post featuring two young people linked to the school.
The post features two white people, one female and one male, in black face in front of a rebel flag to celebrate Donald Trump's win in the presidential election.
SIU-C spokesperson Rae Goldsmith says the school tries to balance how to deal with potential violations of the student code and the use of free speech.
"We value free speech. But, we also expect it to be respectful as a member of the university community. So, some of this is an educational opportunity. When speech crosses the line, and could become threatening, then we might have a different situation."
The chancellor's office sent out a message to the campus community Thursday saying the school is reviewing every offensive incident and will take appropriate action.
The message said acts of intolerance also can be reported to the Dean of Students Office at (618) 453-2461. Counseling and Psychological Services staff is also available to assist students who may need support. That number is (618) 453-5371.
Goldsmith says these types of things are popping up in a lot of places.
"Campuses across the country are facing this in the aftermath of the election. So, these things are not unique to SIU."
