SIU Student Killed in Crash

A weekend crash just west of the SIU Carbondale campus killed one student and sent five other people to the hospital.

Carbondale Police report 25-year old Kenton James Barrick of Marion- a senior studying Computer Science - was killed in the motorcycle-versus-car crash along Chautauqua Road at McLafferty Road Sunday afternoon.

Police say Barrick was traveling northbound on McClafferty when he failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with a vehicle traveling east bound on Chautauqua.  The impact from the initial crash caused the car to collide with a third vehicle, which then collided with a fourth vehicle.

Also injured in the multi-vehicle accident were Barrick's passengre on the motorcycle 22-year old Courtney Hamilton of Carbondale - a junior in Early Childhood Education, who was transferred to St. Louis University Hospital.  Others injured included  Zachary Valent - a senior in Art, and Jessica Kay Allee - a graduate student in Art History and Visual Culture. Both Valent and Allee were treated and released at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Radio-Television Associate Professors Jay Needham and Wago Lee Kreider were also injured, both were treated and released from Memorial Hospital.

Chancellor Cheng says SIU Counseling Center staff will be available to students, and is asking the campus community to keep those involved in their thoughts and prayers.
