Homes Which Served as Offices at SIU Carbondale Began Coming Down Monday (Jul 13)

SIU Carbondale has begun demolition on some of its older properties this week.

Nine vacant buildings located on SIU's campus are scheduled for demolition. The buildings are located on Elizabeth, Oakland, Whitney and Normal streets.

Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Kevin Bame says there is a possibility for future use of the demolition sites.

"At the present time, the sites will be used as green space. Then there's along-term discussion with the President and Board of Trustees on the future use of that space, as it relates to the campus master plan."

The buildings are being eliminated due to their age and because of how expensive they are to maintain. Some of these buildings were built in the 1930's and 1940's and none were considered historical sites.

Jennifer Fuller joined Capitol News Illinois in July 2023 as the organization’s broadcast director. She will oversee the launch and operations of CNI’s new broadcast division.
