More than 2.3 million Illinois taxpayers have already filed their income tax returns, with more than half-receiving refunds.
The Illinois Department of Revenue announced Thursday that $524 million in refunds have been paid to early filers. Department spokeswoman Sue Hofer says 95 percent of filers so far have filed electronically. She is urging taxpayers not to wait to file their tax returns. Hofer says the state has its own tax filing program, allowing taxpayers to file their returns at no cost on a secure website. Taxpayers with refunds coming can request direct deposit, a paper check or a Chase debit card. Hofer says working families and senior citizens can obtain free tax filing help at hundreds of locations in Illinois communities. A complete list of tax filing assistance centers is available on the department's tax website.
The tax filing deadline is Tuesday, April 15th.
