“American Denial” To Address Unconscious Bias

Carbondale, Ill. -- WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale Public Library have rescheduled the free screening and discussion of the Independent Lens film American Denial for thisSaturday, March 7 at 1:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main.

Father Joseph Brown, a professor in SIU Africana Studies, and Cathy Field of the Carbondale Racial Justice Coalition will moderate an in-depth discussion after the film.

Presented as part of WSIU's participation in Community Cinema, a community engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and Independent Lens, American Denial follows the story of foreign researcher and Nobel Laureate GunnarMyrdal whose study, An American Dilemma (1944), provides a provocative inquiry into the dissonance between stated beliefs as a society and what is perpetuated and allowed in the name of those beliefs.

Myrdal's inquiry into the United States' racial psyche becomes a lens for modern inquiry into how denial, cognitive dissonance, and unrecognized, unconscious attitudes continue to dominate racial dynamics in American life. The film's unusual narrative also sheds light on the unconscious political and moral world of modern Americans.

For more information, contact Kate West, Community Cinema Coordinator and Graduate Assistant, SIU Carbondale College of Mass Communications and Media Arts, at (618) 453-5060 or kate.west@wsiu.org.
