Talks are expected this week to find a middle ground on a gun bill that would send offenders to jail for three years if they commit a crime with a gun in Illinois.
The measure, which would impose the stiffer sentence, was supposed to be called for a committee vote last week. The sponsor pulled it over concerns that there could be some unintended consequences that could send the wrong people to jail.
State Representative Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg says both sides of the ongoing gun debate are putting aside personal differences to work towards a solution on a bill that would set stiffer penalties for people who commit a crime using a gun.
Phelps says he hopes they will be able to call the bill next week during the final week of the fall veto session.
U-S Senator Mark Kirk is pushing for the state regulations as a means to cutting down on gang violence in Chicago.
