The Illinois House will convene a special investigating committee to review a federal bribery charge against one of its members. The bipartisan panel will meet Tuesday in Springfield to consider whether discipline is warranted against Representative Derrick Smith. Smith was arrested March 13th. He is charged with taking a $7,000 bribe in exchange for his endorsement of what he thought was a daycare center's state grant application.
House rules lay out procedures for determining whether a member should face reprimand, censure or expulsion. But committee member Representative Will Davis of Homewood says it's a rare proceeding and ``we'll figure it out as we go along.''
Top democrats including Governor Pat Quinn and Smith's political sponsor Secretary of State Jesse White have said Smith should resign.
