The former treasurer of a union for correctional workers in southern Illinois has been sentenced for stealing thousands of dollars in union dues.
The U.S. attorney for Southern Illinois says 44-year-old Jeffrey Magelitz was sentenced to two years' probation, six months of home detention and 100 hours of community service.
The Chester man was convicted in a two count indictment charging him with embezzlement and theft.
From January 2012 through June 2013, Magelitz was the treasurer of AFSCME Local 415 in Vienna, which represents employees at the Vienna Correctional Center.
Magelitz embezzled about 30-thousand dollars and prepared and cashed unauthorized checks for himself and forged the signatures of the president and vice president of the union on the checks. He also submitted a false annual report for the union which included the forged signature of the president and falsely reported the amount of money he received during the year.
Magelitz made full restitution before the sentencing.
