A southern Illinois woman survived after her car collided with an Amtrak train.
The Jackson County Sheriff's office says the crash occurred as 48-year-old Monique Leonard of Carterville was heading west across the railroad tracks Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Helm Road, south of Desoto.

Leonard suffered non-life threatening injuries and she was taken to a local hospital. Her car was severely damaged, with pieces thrown south of the crash scene.

The train was damaged and needed repairs to reach the Carbondale Amtrak station.

An investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
