Budget Impasse Halts Construction, Adds Cost

construction

An Associated Press analysis of state records shows there are 218 building projects halted due to the nearly five-month budget crisis.

Gov. Bruce Rauner suspended work July 1. Officials don't know how much the ongoing delay will add to project costs.

Lyndsey Walters is spokeswoman for the Capital Development Board. She says construction had begun on 95 of the job sites and 11 of them are far enough along that they need to be protected from winter weather. That will cost the state more than $2 million.

More than 65 percent of that money _ $463 million _ is tied up in 81 projects at 27 colleges and universities. Educators have scrambled for alternate space.
The projects remain idle because there's no budget agreement.

Companies are stuck not being paid for work and swallowing costs for starting and then stopping. The state has paid 65 percent of the $707 million total cost.

The projects range from universities, state parks, prisons and historical sites.
