Governor Matt Bevin signed an executive order Thursday declaring a statewide emergency in response of flooding in portions of western Kentucky.

The declaration gives local officials immediate access to to enact emergency plans and waive formal procedures for using state equipment and funds to aid the public.

In a news release, Governor Bevin thanked officials for working to minimize the impact of the storm. He also urged citizens to take the necessary precautions to stay safe.

Director of Kentucky Emergency Management Michael Dossett said some areas of western Kentucky had more than 15 inches of rainfall in a short period of time. He added that high temperatures are creating further concern for local responders assisting displaced residents.
