In 2016, more than 10 percent of all 16-24 year olds in Illinois were both jobless and out of school.

State Sen. Dave Syverson is part of the state task force working to identify the barriers of employment holding back young adults. They met with community leaders in Rockford this week. Syverson says it's an issue far more complex than simply sending state money.

There are also a disproportionate number of black and Latino teens (16-19) and young adults (20-24) who are jobless and not in school.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says so many kids today are specializing in just one sport, that the number of overuse injuries is reaching numbers never before seen.

The sponsor of a proposal to ban Illinois children younger than 12 from playing tackle football tells The Associated Press the measure lacks the votes to pass this session.

Democratic Rep. Carol Sente of Vernon Hills says a House floor would fall short. She will focus on educating people about the dangers of "repeated ... hits to the youth brain."

The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale will hold their third annual competition and dinner this Thursday in the  SIU Student Center.  Tina Carpenter, the Executive Director of the Club says past winners have gone on to have productive careers.
