Some Rend Lake Campgrounds Will Open June 1

The first day of June will bring good news to Rend Lake Campers.  The U-S Army Corps of Engineers says effective on 8:00AM  June 1st, the following Campgrounds will reopen:   Sandusky, both North and Sound, Gun Creek and South Marcum.

The Shawnee National Forest is reopening two popular recreation areas today (Friday).

On its Facebook page, the Forest announced Garden of the Gods and Bell Smith Springs will be open to the public, as long as people practice social distancing guidelines

For over a year, southern Illinois stakeholders spearheaded by SIU Carbondale's Innovation and Economic Development and State Senator Paul Schimpf, have been gathering input and compiling a study highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Randolph County, and Perry County's Pyramid State Recreation Area.

A presentation that maps out the future of Pyramid State Park and the World Shooting and Recreational Complex is set to be presented early next week.

The plan's formation took meeting once a month over the span of 15 months for the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor John Dunn and Innovation and Economic Development office to facilitate the grassroots task force that will present it's strategic planning report and recommendations on August 5 at 4 p.m. at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex Main Event Center in Sparta.

In the April municipal elections, voters in Carbondale by a wide margin chose to further study the merging of the Carbondale Park District with the City of Carbondale.

No matter where you are in Tucson, Ariz., you're no more than 20 miles from Saguaro National Park. The park and its tall, pronged, namesake cacti literally surround Tucson. There's the rounded top of the park's cactus-studded Wasson Peak to the west, the park's desert-to-forest Rincon Mountain Range to the east and about a million people living between.

But if you go around Tucson — to its historic barrio neighborhoods, swap meets or hiking trails — and ask people about their neighboring national park, you might be surprised.

Eagle Creek Resort

State efforts to reopen the long-closed Eagle Creek Resort on Lake Shelbyville in central Illinois haven't gotten very far -- especially with the current budget crisis. So local officials in Shelby and Moultrie Counties have formed a task force to tackle the problem themselves.
