Murphysboro Hotel Progressing

After some delays, including flooding and licensing issues, work is proceeding on the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, being built at the intersection of Illinois Routes 13 and 127 in Murphysboro.

The Murphysboro City Council has approved the adoption of the Murphysboro Economic Relief COVID-19 Event program.

On his Facebook page, Mayor Will Stephens said this City funded program re-purposes $38,000 in grant funding that had previously been earmarked for a business revolving loan fund.

The Murphysboro City Council will be holding a special City Council Meeting this evening to consider the Murphysboro Economic Relief COVID-19 Event.

Mayor Will Stephens says this program would be City funded, and would provide economic relief of up to a thousand dollars for small business owners in Murphysboro.

Murphysboro School District 186 is preparing and delivering meals to students during the COVID-19 shutdown.

Ameren says it made an error in sending out a letter to nearly 900 customers in Murphysboro indicating the city was increasing its municipal utility tax rate.

Governor J-B Pritzker is announcing more than $5 million in grants to help kids get to school a little easier.

Union County State's Attorney Tyler Edmonds says 48-year-old William Wasmund of Chester has been indicted on one count of First Degree Murder in connection with the death of 53-year-old Jeffery Spicer of Murphysboro.

Science Night Comes To Murphysboro

This Thursday (January 18) in Murphysboro, the public is invited to a night of hands–on exploring.  The first ever science night is the work of the Murphysboro Middle School Parent, Student and Teacher Association.

Officials in Jackson, Monroe, Randolph and Perry Counties are gaining support to make the two-lane highway, Illinois 127, four lanes. They're calling it the 4 Lane 4 County Commission.

Students at Murphysboro High School were sent home early Thursday after the school received a bomb threat.

According to the district's Facebook page, school officials were alerted to the threat at around 1 p.m. and students were dismissed soon after that.

Murphysboro High School administrators and teachers will have to do some rearranging, after the roof collapsed Monday morning into the school's auditorium.

Murphysboro Landmark To Make Way for New Development

The site of the Apple Tree Inn, at the Intersection of Illinois Routes 13 and 127 in Murphysboro, has had a variety of hotels and motels since the 1960s.  Lately, however,  the well-known landmark  has fallen into disrepair and is being demolished to make way for a mixed business site including a restaurant, gas station hotel and other businesses.

Joe Koppeis, a Columbia Illinois-based developer says the new construction should begin in one to two months.

Jackson County Illinois was formed from parts of Randolph and Johnson Counties and became the ninth county in the state on January 10th, 1816.  To commemorate the event, the Murphysboro Tourism Commission, the Jackson County Government, the Illinois State Historical Society and descendants of one of the founders, Conrad Will, will unveil two historical event markers on Saturday January 23rd, 2016 at 2:00PM at the Jackson County Courthouse in Murphysoro.
