Nancy Guyton has lived by the Mississippi River her entire life. She and her husband farm in Annada, a small town on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. She knows that growing crops on the floodplain comes with some risks.

The Guytons’ farm, about 65 miles north of St. Louis, endured major floods along the Mississippi in 1993 and 2008. But since 2008, she’s noticed more flood events.

Authorities say a sewer line in southern Illinois broke last month and daily is dumping about 2 million gallons of storm water and sewage into the Mississippi River.

The Union County Sheriff's Office and the the county emergency management agency wants residents in the Wolf Lake and Ware areas to consider evacuating until the Mississippi River falls to a safe level.

Officials say several sand boils were identified on the levee west of Wolf Lake. Local, state and federal agencies say their non-stop work to stabilize the sand boils appears to be successful, so far.
